About Journal

General information

The Ideology and Politics Journal is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Foundation for Good Politics.

ISSN 2227-6068

The Ideology and Politics Journal (IPJ) aims to provide an interdisciplinary platform for informed, non-partisan scholarly debate in social philosophy, political science, sociology, political economy, intellectual history, and cultural studies.  Devoted to the advancement of the understanding of socio-political processes in contemporary societies around the world, the IPJ  publishes special issues aimed at specific regions:

— From 2011 to 2021, IPJ focused primarily on post-communist and post-Soviet regions. These issues were published in English, Russian, and Ukrainian. This focus remains central to the journal: each year, IPJ publishes at least one issue dedicated to ideological and political developments in these regions. However, we moved to English-only publication.

— Occasionally, we shall also publish IPJ special issues on ideological and political processes in other regions of the world. These issues will also be published in English only.

Whichever region is selected, the IPJ deals with the ideological and intellectual issues arising in the course of the formation of new societies or the transformation of established ones.  The IPJ authors explore how societies acknowledge power relations, socio-economic realities, shifts in values, and guiding ideas for political development.  They also consider how societies understand, remember, and represent themselves and their pasts, as well as how they project their futures. The IPJ offers its readers theoretical and empirical works that are of interest beyond the narrow circles of academics.

The Ideology and Politics Journal is dedicated to the analysis of ideologies in their political, social, and conceptual forms.  We recognize the complexity and vagueness of the concept of ideology.  To address this complexity, the IPJ focuses its publications on the broadly defined manifestations of ideologies, including:

  • political ideologies, culture, and discourse
  • phenomena of power
  • epistemological issues of truth, values, legitimacy, and institutions
  • domination, exploitation, and solidarity
  • recognition issues
  • collective identities and memories
  • ideological traditions and innovations
  • correlation of politics, religion, security, and economy

Founded by the Foundation for Good Politics (FGP), the Ideology and Politics Journal encourages discussion of the historical, cultural, and ethical dimensions of political action, with the intention to contribute to both the advancement of interdisciplinary research of contemporary ideologies and the promotion of a good politics around the world.

The Ideology and Politics Journal is published twice per year in an open-access electronic format.  The Journal is published in electronic form.

IPJ does not charge authors any submission fees, article processing charges, publication fees, or peer-review fees. All published content is freely available to readers.

Peer Review Policy

The Ideology and Politics Journal is a peer-reviewed academic journal. Since 2012, all research articles submitted to IPJ and considered for publication have undergone a double-anonymous, double-unanimous peer-review process.

IPJ uses double-anonymous peer review. The identities of authors are not disclosed to reviewers, and the identities of reviewers are not disclosed to authors. Authors are asked to submit manuscripts in a form that allows anonymized review.

All submitted manuscripts are first screened by the Editor-in-Chief or a responsible member of the editorial team. At this stage, the editors assess whether the manuscript fits the journal’s aims and scope, the announced theme of the call for papers, meets basic scholarly and ethical standards, follows the journal’s author guidelines, and is suitable for external review. Manuscripts may be rejected at this preliminary stage if they are outside the journal’s scope, do not meet basic scholarly standards, contain evident ethical problems, or are not prepared in accordance with the journal’s requirements.

Manuscripts that pass the initial editorial screening are sent to at least two independent reviewers with relevant expertise in the manuscript’s field. Reviewers are selected on the basis of scholarly competence, independence, and absence of conflicts of interest. Reviewers are asked to evaluate the manuscript’s originality, scholarly relevance, conceptual and methodological quality, use of sources, clarity of argument, structure, and contribution to the relevant field of research.

IPJ applies a double-unanimous review rule. A research article can be accepted for publication only if both independent reviewers provide a positive recommendation, either acceptance or acceptance after revision. If one or both reviewers provide a negative recommendation, the manuscript cannot be accepted for publication. When reviewers recommend revision, the author is asked to revise the manuscript in response to their comments. The revised manuscript may be assessed by the editors and, where necessary, returned to the original reviewers or sent to an additional independent reviewer.

The final decision is made by the Editor-in-Chief or the responsible editor(s), on the basis of the reviewers’ reports, the journal’s editorial standards, and the author’s revisions.

Reviewers must not evaluate manuscripts in which they have a conflict of interest arising from personal, professional, institutional, financial, political, or other relationships with the author or the research. Reviewers who feel unqualified to assess a manuscript or unable to provide a timely and impartial review are expected to decline the invitation.

Reviewer identities remain confidential. Authors receive editorial decisions and, where appropriate, anonymized reviewer comments intended to help them understand the decision and improve the manuscript.

Special-issue submissions follow the same peer-review procedure as regular submissions. Articles submitted to special issues are subject to double-anonymous review by at least two independent reviewers.

Guest editors may propose themes, invite submissions, and assist with scholarly coordination, but the Editor-in-Chief remains responsible for the academic quality and integrity of the entire journal, including special issues. Guest editors’ credentials are checked and approved by the journal.

If guest editors or the Editor-in-Chief submit manuscripts to a special issue, they are fully recused from the review and decision-making process for those manuscripts. Such submissions are handled by an independent responsible editor, without the submitting editor’s access to reviewer identities, reviewer reports, or editorial deliberations. Articles by guest editors or the Editor-in-Chief are limited and cannot dominate the issue.

Research articles are subject to the peer-review process described above. Editorials, introductions to special issues, interviews, book reviews, and other non-research materials may be reviewed editorially by the Editor-in-Chief or responsible editors. If a published item has followed a different review procedure, this is indicated clearly.

All manuscripts under review are treated as confidential documents. Editors and reviewers must not disclose, circulate, cite, or use unpublished manuscript materials without the author’s written permission.

IPJ normally does not accept manuscripts with more than three authors, unless the number of authors is justified in the cover letter and approved by the Editor-in-Chief.

The peer-review process is conducted in accordance with IPJ’s publication ethics policy and with the principles of scholarly integrity, impartiality, confidentiality, and academic independence.

By submitting their papers to the journal, the authors agree to these conditions.
